What does the latest content marketing research say about how brands should win attention now?

Sprout Social’s 2026 Influencer Marketing Report, released on Aug. 3, shows that influencer reach is increasingly disconnected from follower count. The report says 60% of Instagram Reels reach audiences where more than 70% of viewers are non-followers, while only 17% of consumers still use follower count to decide who to follow. It also found that 81% of Gen Z made a direct purchase from an influencer recommendation in the past year, and 75% of marketers are increasing influencer budgets. Sprout CMO Scott Morris said the future is not about chasing reach through follower totals, but finding creators who fit the broader cultural moment.

That shift is being reinforced by platform policy. Storyboard18 reported that X stopped new Revenue Sharing enrollments on Aug. 7 and will move existing members to Original Content Rewards starting Sept. 8. The new system requires original content, Premium status, and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the past 90 days. For content marketers, that signals a sharper focus on originality, qualified impressions, and content designed for algorithmic distribution rather than repost volume or vanity metrics.

The broader trend is also visible in how tone and authenticity are being packaged. ContentGrip highlighted Canva’s “English (chronically online)” mode, which shows how vibe and personality are becoming part of content-sharing behavior. Secondary signals point in the same direction: smallbiztrends says about 70% of Gen Z and millennials engage continuously, nearly 40% of fans are open to AI-generated content if it is labeled, and 52% discover new content on social media. In parallel, Storyboard18’s SHIELD Bill coverage adds another layer of pressure with parental consent, age verification, and anti-profiling rules for younger users.

Is content marketing moving from scale and frequency toward originality, trust, and platform-native relevance?
